The Oldie Wine
This month’s offer from http://www.waitrosecellar.com/
comprises 12 bottles, three each of the wines below;
RRP £151.08; offer price £114; average price per bottle £9.50
Waitrose Douro Valley Reserva Quinta da Rosa, Portugal 2014, RRP £10.79 Inky, punchy, savoury red, made for Waitrose by the pioneering Berqvist family: we will be staying at their lovely Quinta de la Rosa on our forthcoming Oldie Lisbon and Douro trip in July (see www.theoldie.co.uk/tours).
Saint-Joseph, Cave Saint-Désirat, Northern Rhône, France 2013, RRP £14.99 Classy Syrah from a vintage that was much kinder to the Rhône than to Bordeaux: lots of Syrah’s trademark spiciness, firm tannins and plenty of length. Drinking beautifully now, but it will keep for a few years; in the meantime, decant it for an hour or so.
Vinsobres, Cru des Côtes du Rhône, Les Dauphins, France 2014, RRP £11.99 Vinsobres is, since 2006, one of the sixteen villages at the top of the Rhône’s quality tree, just north of Vacqueyras, Beaumes-de-Venise and Gigondas, and this is delightfully fragrant stuff, with hints of violets floating over rich, autumnal fruit.
