Chess in Washington Square

In Greenwich Village, Washington Square Park is usually a lively gathering of musicians and street artists - while others pass time reading on a park bench, chatting in small groups, or playing chess at the fixed tables in the southwest corner.

Typically a player lays out chess pieces and waits for a stranger or friend to challenge them to a game.

In the time of COVID19, cautious players are wearing facemasks… which are now compulsory inside any retail establishment as mandated by Governor Andrew Cuomo (Democrat), whose authority supersedes that of the Mayor of New York City Bill de Blasio (Democrat).
