Watch video here! "If you hear anyone say that Pam Ayres is no oil painting, you can say I beg to differ," Pam jokes to The Oldie

"If you hear anyone say that Pam Ayres is not an oil painting, you can say I beg to differ," Pam joked at The Oldie literary lunch.

Pam proudly showed us the front cover of her latest book, Doggedly Onward: A Life in Poems, depicting a beautiful oil painting of Pam and her dog Issy.

The front cover was painted by army veteran Alex Chamberlain who has exhibited in The National Portrait Gallery and painted other well-known veterans such as Bear Grylls and Captain Tom. Pam served in the airforce for four years in Singapore.

"I never set out as a poet," Pam told us, "I wanted to be a performer and hoped to make people laugh".

Pam confessed that "getting old - you don't have the stamina like you did before" but The Oldie certainly thinks 77 year old Pam has plenty of stamina. Pam is currently working on a new musical Who Are You Calling Vermin?, based on her 2022 best-selling poetry book. She is working with award-winning composer George Fenton, best known for his musical scores for the David Attenborough programmes.
