Hugo Vickers, recently described as ‘The Tolstoy of royal biographers’, spoke about his new book, Queen Elizabeth II: A Personal History.
He teased his fellow biographer Robert Hardman for being only three years old when Hugo first met the Queen in 1968. Robert may have met Donald Trump in the Oval Office but Hugo met the Queen in the Oak Room at Windsor Castle, to give her a copy of his book.

Robert has written five biographies of the Queen – so Hugo joshed him as the Ralph Halpern of royal biographers. Halpern was the businessman who was once praised as a five-times-a-night performer by his lover.
Hugo spoke warmly of his long attachment to the Queen, which lasted 56 years, until her death in 2022. He felt like he’d been tied to her by a thread throughout her life.
