New York subway gets a deep clean

Boyd Avenue Station en route to JFK airport

For the first time in its 115-year history, the entire Subway network was shut down on Wednesday for a deep clean to zap any lingering COVID traces. The system runs 24 hours a day and is a vital conduit for essential workers who have been offered free buses during the hours of 1-5am for the daily deep clean, which will continue until further notice. Journeys are down by 90% and the decrease in revenue will add enormous financial pressure to the city. Controversially, vast numbers of homeless people were removed and encouraged to take assistance from outreach teams.
