Very few restaurants serve proper British food, as we all know it should be cooked. Yet, Boisdale of Belgravia, London SW1, is leader of the pack. Ranald Macdonald is one of the most innovative restaurateurs in London, which is why he has jazz nights and a cigar terrace.

So when Ranald said ‘How would you like to have a proper tasting of Rhône wines, supplied and tutored by the famous Perrin family, during a slap-up five-course lunch?’ we thought we couldn’t possibly let down our readers.

And what better day than the anniversary of the Battle of Waterloo, about which the French are in such denial they call it the Battle of Mont-Saint-Jean?
