The Gardens and Grandeur of Copenhagen with David Wheeler, 9th - 14th July, 2018

Tours | July 2018

‘Wonderful, wonderful Copenhagen.’ Yes, Danny Kaye got it right in his Hans Christian Andersen movie, and what was right for him in 1952 is right for us today. Join David Wheeler on his fragrant circuit of this wonderful city and its world-class gardens, centred on the delightful Hotel First Mayfair in the city’s Latin Quarter. David has put an emphasis on roses because Denmark at that time will be flooded with rose-lovers from around the globe, assembled in Copenhagen for the 18th World Federation of Rose Societies Convention. From royal palace gardens and the unexpected beauty of myriad pocket-sized gardens in the renowned Tivoli Gardens to the best selection of private rose growers, the itinerary has been fashioned to illuminate and celebrate. We will have dinner in the hotel but explore Copenhagen’s restaurants and cafes at lunch.

Monday 9 July - arrive at Copenhagen

14.25 Depart London Heathrow on BA 0818, arrive 17.20. Transfer to Hotel First Mayfair, located on the edge of the Latin Quarter and a stone's throw from City Hall Square. Talk by David Wheeler

Tuesday  10 July - Royal Danish Horticultural Society's Garden, the David Collection and the King’s Gardens.

A walk through the fashionable Frederiksberg district to the home of the RDHS and tour of the gardens. Lunch is followed by a guided tour of the David Collection, including European 18th Century art and the largest collection of Islamic art in Scandinavia, with artefacts from Spain in the west to India in the east. And then a wander through the King’s Gardens of Rosenborg Castle

Wednesday 11 July - Tivoli Gardens and the Christiansborg Palace

We will be given an early morning tour with the head gardener of these very special little gardens tucked away in the midst of the Tivoli Fun Fair, but juts a short walk from the hotel. And then a tour of the State Rooms of the Christiansborg Palace, where reigning monarch, HM Queen Margrethe II, holds audiences, signs laws, holds receptions and receives state visits. We will then have a tour of the ruins under Chrictiansborg and discover its eight century history. And finally we will climb the Christiansborg Tårnet, Copenhagen’s highest view point.

Thursday 12 July - Gavnø Castle and Herfølge

We will travel by coach out of Copenhagen to visit the spectacular gardens of Gavnø Castle on the south west coast of Zealand stopping on the way at Herfølge to see one of the largest collections of historical roses in Scandinavia.

Friday 13 July - Rosenparken, Hellerup and the Viking Ship Museum of Roskilde

A small but lovely 100-year old rose garden on the coast looking over to Sweden. This is followed by a visit to the Viking Ship Museum in the old Danish capital of Roskilde where we will see the famous five 1000-year old long boats excavated from the mud in 1962.
