The Glorious Baroque and Gastronomy of South-Eastern Sicily

Tours | September 2020

Four years ago, The Oldie had a very successful trip to this extraordinary part of Sicily. The group was based at the Eremo della Giubiliana (, a fortified medieval Hermitage, which is six miles from Ragusa and the same from the sea. Parts of the building date back to the 12th Century and the Knights of Malta had their quarters there in the 16th Century. It has been owned by the same family ever since.

This trip could quite easily be called ‘In the Footsteps of Inspector Montalbano’ since we will be visiting the main locations for the series, and we will certainly be enjoying a great many lunches in his favourite restaurants.

Distances are deceptive on Sicilian roads, so we have purposefully kept the journey times to a maximum of an hour, with the exception of a trip to the Villa Romana del Casale, famous for its bikini girls (pictured below), but the rest of the 4,000 square feet of Roman mosaics are even more stunning. When we went, it was the highlight of our holiday, but the Baroque wonders of Ragusa, Modica and Noto are sensational.

Who better than Huon Mallalieu to explain the architecture and Bill Knott, a veteran of the last tour, who has even given talks on Montalbano country, to introduce you to the food and wine?

We will have a local tour rep to escort you every day and knowledgeable guides for the main days. The beach day will speak for itself!

Due to the recent collapse of sterling, The Oldie needs to protect itself against further sudden falls, and, hence, reserves the right to change the price of the holiday. The Oldie is happy to maintain the current price until the euro drops below €1 to £1, using FairFX’s currency rates as the arbiter. The current rate is €1.09 for £1.

We will absorb (and you will not be charged for) any increase equivalent to 2% of the price of your travel arrangements, which excludes insurance premiums and any amendment charges. You will be charged for the amount over and above that, i.e. if the exchange rate falls below €1 to £1 before May 31st, 2020. However, there will be no change after June 15th, 2020, if rates drop.

If this means that you have to pay an increase of more than 10% of the price of your travel arrangements, you will have the option of cancelling and receiving a full refund of all monies paid, except for an admin fee of £100. Should you decide to cancel: 1) you must do so within 14 days from the date on your final invoice of June 1st, 2020 2) We will provide a refund of insurance premiums paid to us if you can show that you are unable to transfer or reuse your policy. Should the price of your holiday go down due to the changes mentioned above, by more than 2% of your holiday cost, i.e. if the euro were to reach €1.20 to £1, then any refund due will be paid to you. However, please note that travel arrangements are not always purchased in local currency and some apparent changes have no impact on the price of your travel due to contractual and other protection.
