Mary Beard addresses Oldie lunchgoers at the National Liberal Club on Tuesday 12 December 2023 about her latest blockbuster book: Emperor of Rome.
Mary reveals all things Emperor - what they wore, what they did, what they ate, their day-to-day business and tasks.
We learn about lesser-known Emperors such as the young Elagabalus, who briefly ruled over Rome in the third century AD – he loved whoopee cushions. Beard does a wonderful job of taking us into the fantasy, desires and projection circling around the rulers of ancient Rome.
