Listen to Adam Sisman who spoke about his latest biography, The Indefatigable Asa Briggs: A Biography at The Oldie lunch on 9th December. Adam admitted he had hoped to title his book The Man Who Could Not Say ‘No'!—an affectionate nod to Briggs’s inexhaustible energy. Adam’s publisher, however, felt the title might invite the wrong sort of curiosity.
Sisman said that Briggs was so keen to take up offers to speak at places other than at his own university, that Adam's colleague Hugh Trevor Roper asked fellows: 'What is the difference between the good Lord and Lord Briggs?' The answer: 'The good Lord is always with us!'
