Candida Meyrick talked about her new book, Be More Bird: Life Lessons from a Hawk, at the Oldie Literary Lunch at the National Liberal Club.
After writing six novels, the artist and entrepreneur became a… falconer.
‘I suppose it was my midlife crisis. Instead of a toyboy, I got a Harris hawk.’
Hawking is the perfect get-away-from-it-all pursuit. If Candida is in a business meeting, she can just say, ‘Sorry – I’ve got to go hawking.’ For six months of the year, she takes her hawk out for several hours a day.
Her new pursuit also proved an extraordinarily redemptive path for Candida after suffering from cancer.
