SIR: The modesty of Margaret Thatcher’s tombstone (The Old Un’s Notes, August issue) contrasts sharply with the pomp of her ‘ceremonial’ funeral service in St Paul’s Cathedral. I have often wondered whose idea this was, and who authorised it. The only comparable service in living memory was that for Sir Winston Churchill. However, I doubt whether even the most ardent admirer of Lady Thatcher would regard her contribution to this country as coming anywhere near that of Sir Winston.
