Poor Wilfred

Letters | October 2017

SIR: Interesting to learn from Wilfred De’Ath (August issue) that a meal in a ‘social’ restaurant in France now costs around €10. I lived in rural France for some years from 2001, and one of the delights of our stay was that nearly every village had a small restaurant offering a fine meal, three courses plus wine, for €10 (then £6.50) or less. Sadly though, this was at the price of family members working long hours for low returns, and many have now disappeared. Keith Collard, Ilkley, Yorkshire. PS The man’s always short of money, couldn’t you pay him a bit more?...
